Today one of my friends was facing a strange problem, the .chm files could not be opened in Windows XP. Searching the net i found this suggestion mentioned below,

If .CHM files cannot be displayed properly under Windows XP, remember to unblock them: 1. right-click on .CHM file 2. select ‘Properties’ 3. click ‘Unblock’ button The ‘Unblock’ buttom appears only on .CHM files downloaded from Internet: ‘This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.’

Since i am not sure if the suggestion will work or not, i searched for an alternative option, this was when i found “chm encoder” a freeware utility which accepts a chm file and converts it into html files. If the “generate menu” is selected then the software generated nice menus for easy navigation. I tried it and it works fine, a cool freeware program.

Update: There exists xChm - a software which I currently use in fedora to view chm files, i found that a version for windows also exists.

I use Liferea for RSS feeds, and since I use Tango icons for my desktop, i would like the same look carried over to other applications, I have Tango themes installed on Thunderbird and Firefox, now i have found the tango icons for liferea.

I am liking having a common look and feel to many of my applications. Please note the instructions given on that page on how to install the icons. Have a nice time & tango.

Gnome 2.14 has been released and it is available for download. Want to know whats new in this release then hop over to http://www.gnome.org/start/2.14/notes/en/index.html to read the release notes.

Linux.com has also done a review of Gnome 2.14 wherein they say: “The GNOME 2.14 release continues this tradition. Although few major innovations are visible to the user, the release includes another round of improvements in usability and the continued development of the desktop administration tools, as well as numerous small improvements in productivity software.”

Overall, i am dying to lay my hands on this release, i am currenly running 2.10 that comes with Fedora Core 4, also in a few hours is the release of Fedora Core 5, which includes gnome 2.14. So it seems I will have to wait till the next ILUG-Mangalore meeting to lay my hands on FC5 + gnome 2.14, wherein hopefully someone will be able to download and bring a copy of it. I will write my own review this time when i get hold of it.

Taken from Straight Dope: “A friend and I were playing Nintendo, the original eight-bit system, and we played Duck Hunt, a game that requires a “light gun.” I was wondering: How exactly does the Nintendo game “know” where you are pointing the gun on the screen when you shoot ducks?!? Very mind-boggling! –Matt”

Cecil replies:
You’re going to give yourself such a smack when you hear this one. Stripped of the high-tech accoutrements (by 1980s standards, anyway), it’s the oldest trick in the book. You think you’re using the gun to shoot at the TV, right? But really the TV is shooting the gun….

Colour blindness is the inability to perceive differences between some or all colors that other people can distinguish. About 10% of males have a color perception defect, but color blindness is rare in females.

Take the test here.

Hey! I took the test which is just to look at the image and tell which number is there on the image, i saw the right number, hence i am not color blind. Time to celebrate right!!!

In this article, the author proves that Windows XP can be installed, and ‘run’, on processors with as little as 8MHz. “The target of this project was to find the weakest system where you can run Windows XP. Keep in mind, that Microsoft official requirements are a CPU with 233 MHz an 64 MB of RAM. But that had to be beaten!”

DesktopLinux.com reports “Google has announced it has opened up its new instant messaging service, Google Talk, to all other IM networks that utilize the XMPP protocol, which originally was developed for Jabber. This enables Google users to communicate directly with users of Linux IM clients GAIM and Psi, Apple’s iChat, Jabber, Gizmo Project, Tiscali, Netease, Chikka, MediaRing, and several others.”

Me: “It is good to notice that google is opening up, and it is also nice to know that now one can chat with almost all the im service users using a single client such as GAIM, which i use sometimes.

I found this on digital inspiration blog.

Though Firefox doesn’t provide native support for viewing or writing MHTML files, the Mozilla Archive Format (MAF) Firefox extension can help you. Once installed in Firefox, this extension lets you save Web pages in the open-source .MAFF format. It can also read and write .MHT files, which IE users can open.

However, the MAF Firefox extension requires Firefox 1.5+. If you are on a previous version, you can either install the View in IE or IE Tab extension.

News.com.com reports that:

In their latest action, filed last week, the examiners concluded that the company’s File Allocation Table (FAT) file system is, in fact, “novel and non-obvious,” entitling it to patentability. Now the office is in the process of issuing a “patent re-examination certificate,” which signals the finality of the decision, a Microsoft representative said.

But the sad part is as under:
“It also voiced concern that Microsoft would try to seek royalties from companies that sell and support Linux for using the technology, potentially posing a threat to the free software community. Under the terms of the Free Software Foundation’s General Public License, Linux cannot be distributed if it contains patented technology that requires royalty payments.”

Lets wait and see what the outcome of this is, we may soon see what action Microsoft plans to take.

The eGranary Digital Library provides over 2.5 million digital resources to institutions lacking adequate Internet access. Through a process of copying Web sites and delivering them to intranet Web servers inside partner institutions in ‘developing’ countries, this digital library delivers educational materials for instant access over local area networks.

Says the project proponents: “For schools that are spending enormous amounts of money for their slow and unreliable internet connections, the eGranary Digital Library slips seamlessly into the network and delivers its Web pages up to 5,000 times faster. At the same time, such schools can save tens of thousands of dollars in bandwidth costs every year. For those schools, clinics, and libraries WITHOUT an Internet connection, the eGranary Digital Library is a phenomenon!”

It is working in more than 60 institutions in Africa, Bangladesh and
Haiti, and the eGranary Digital Library says it provides lightning fast access to a wide variety of educational materials including video, audio, books, journals, and Web sites, even where no Internet access exists.
eGranary Digital Library include: U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Columbia University, Cornell University, MIT’s OpenCourseware, UNESCO, Wikipedia, the Virtual Hospital, World Bank and WHO.

eGranary Project is a what schools in India need, this will work beautifully as a digital library and this can be used without much changes to schools existing computer infrastructure and will allow students to garner information other than they find in their textbooks.
