I publish my post at random intervals, sometimes when I am in a good mood I write 2-3 post in a single day, and sometimes none. But this pattern is not a good one since the people who subscribe through feeds and via emails sometimes they get no mails and sometimes far too many. So wouldn’t it be great if there was a feature that would allow you to keep the post pending till a certain date and then publish it.

Well I just found that Wordpress has this feature where one can set the date and time of the post to be published. If the date and time is in future, then Wordpress will publish that post on that date automatically without you having to do anything much.

Wordpress - Post TimeStamp OptionThe only thing that is required to be done is before publishing a post, scroll down till you find ‘Post Timestamp’ (see image) in the sidebar on the right, Once the selection of the date and time is done, click on ‘Publish’. Voila…Its that easy.

Other situations I can imagine is when I want to do post’s regularly but I am free only on weekends, hence using this option I can write 3-4 posts, assign the timestamps and publish them the coming week. Also useful if one is going on a long holiday and blogging is difficult during that period.

So you may ask why is it important that one keep posting regularly? Well the answer is simple, if one needs loyal readers then regular posting is the way to go, else they will not remember to visit. Anyways, I will try this setting for the first time for this post by setting it to publish at 4:00 pm today (25 Nov), lets see if it actually does that.

Update: The automatic posting worked like a gem, this posting was done this way, so expect more good posts in coming weeks.

Today I will review, Drivel, a blog client for creating and editing blog entries, that supports Atom, Blogger, LiveJournal, MoveableType and Wordpress. It features one important aspect of such editors, one that of create the blog entries in an offline mode and later uploading it.

Installation:
I got a FC5 rpm from here, there is also a Ubuntu deb and sources which can be used to create an installation. The installation was trouble free and there were no dependencies. During installation it created a link in Application -> Internet menu.

Setup:

Login Screen

The initial screen, actually a login screen asks for your username and password for accessing your blog, a combo box allows you to choose the Journal Type (blogger, moveabletype, livejournal etc). If you are a wordpress user like me then choose MoveableType. Then type the complete address of you blog (wordpress users must add xmlrpc.php at the end, for example for me, it is http://nithinkamath.info/xmlrpc.php). That is all that is required, and I was able to login.

Using:

Drivel in Offline mode

The actual feature set for the software is good, this post is typed completely in offline mode of the editor. There is a save draft button which allows one to save the blog posts for later posting. In the online mode, there are much more options such as editing the existing entries. It also provides for HTML syntax highlighting.

Pro’s:

  • Light weight and fast.
  • Integrates nicely with gnome, and includes a good help.
  • Provides access to recent post to edit and update them.
  • Allows to create post in offline mode.
  • Good integration with LiveJournal.
  • Spell check and HTML syntax highlighting support.
  • Supports many languages.

Con’s:

  • Integration with Wordpress is not yet good.
  • Has support to add only one category for a post.
  • Does not allow to upload images from within the editor, just supports linking.
  • Does not save the draft internally, need a filename to be specified.

Conclusion:
To conclude Drivel is a good piece of software, the integration with various Journals is a good feature. So I would recommend it to anyone who is in a lookout for a way to post blog entries without the need to log in to the blog, which may be true for those who are on dial-up connections. But I won’t be using it for the time being, but may be a little later when it has lots more features. Currently I like Tomboy, the note taking application to write the post and then upload them manually.

After I made the previous post, I visited by blog to see if the post was appearing properly, it was then I noticed in the random post section, a post made in November 2005 - “How much is my blog worth“.

This was the result then:

As per business-opportunities.biz my blog, nithinkamath.info, is worth $2,822.70

My blog is worth $2,822.70.
How much is your blog worth?

And to my utter surprise, I found that the current worth of my blog is as mentioned by the site: “Your blog, nithinkamath.info/, is worth $6,209.94 ”

My blog is worth $6,209.94.
How much is your blog worth?

It is a great feeling and …. At Rs.45 per $, it comes up to an amount close to Rs.280,000/- If you have an offer close to that amount, please contact me, I might consider your offer. :)

Blog ThemeIn the previous 2-3 days I have been trying out many new things with regards to blog. Here are a few changes that have been done:

> Changed the blog theme to Rounded V2 Blue which can be got from http://www.itcouldbethisone.com/ Decided to change to this even though it does not support 800×600, due to the cool look of the theme and also because it nicely divides the articles representation wise.

> Added the “Read blog post through email” option, this allows you to receive all the blog posts that i make through email. This feature is provided using FeedBlitz.

> “Random Post” option display previous posts in a random order.

> Subscribing to feeds for various online feed readers added.

> Site Statistics display using NeoCounter, this nicely shows how many visitors are online at a particular time and how many visitors have I got from various countries.

If you come across any problems when using the blog please let me know through the comments option.
