Reservation/Quota! The two words which you will hear a lot in India, where ever you go these are the words you cannot escape. Right from school till you die you will have to live with this, why? Becuase with more and more catagories being created what is left for the so called ‘General’ category is marching towards nill. I would not be surprised if we soon reach a stage where there will be only 5% available to ‘General Category’ and the rest will be reserved for one of the various catagories, in process paving way to ‘Reservation’ based community like in olden times, just the names would be different, now it would be SC/ST/OBC etc.
Let me take the example here, for the BBMP (local) polls here in Bangalore there are 198 wards/seats out of which 127 have some sort of reservation linked to them!! It may be either SC/ST/BC/Women etc, which leaves only a mearge 71 for the ‘General’!! Then there is a news article in today’s paper which tells that the Madras High Court has asked the nationalised banks to promote to officer cadre the people who have joined under the reserved quota. The banks had put forward the point that the promotions should be based on merit cum seniority and not quota, but the HC didn’t fully agree with this. So this bring me to the point “Where are we heading?”
It is not that I am fully against the concept of reserved quota for certain section of the society. I feel it should be only available at max till the end of Graduation, after that there should be no Reservation concept at all. There is no point in giving jobs to people who do not have the required skills by overriding people who have slogged it out and are denied the opportunity just because of the quota system. When this happens the person with skills is discouraged and encouragement is given to people who can under quota get a job even though they are not apt to do the job. I do not say that everyone who get a job under quota do not work properly but a reasonable portion spoil it for all. So at the end everyone suffers, the people are denied proper service and every thing gets delayed.
I think the time had come for India to look forward to a new way to provide opportunities without using the Reservation quota system. But with politician who are here to promote their own selfish desires rather than people causes it looks like a dream that the system would change.
What do you all think about the reservation/quota system in India?

Good one Nithin!
While i agree with you that the reservation is quite painful especially when we find that more than 50% chances are out for the reserved quota…
But lets look at a different angle…. there are two india… one which lives in the cities with access to the best education, living styles, job, and money to make a good living… on the other hand we have the poorer class which strugles to make both ends meet, right from birth they struggle for basic education, food, clothing etc… one out of every three indians live in these dreaded condition… Hence making india one of the poorest countries. Hence we need to give a helping hand to such people.
We need to bridge the two india. One of the measures is to give them a reservation so that they too come up in lives and tap their unexplored talents in all areas. Once they come up in life they will give good education to their children and slowly the reservation system will come to an end. This phase is the changing phase in india.
However we must be dead against
1) Reservation just because the politicians see them as a major vote bank
2) Reservation which does not differentiate between the poor making the rich people also accessible to reservation system.
Hope one day the we will be able to bridge the gap and see a vibrant developed country…
Signing off…
Sachin

Hi,
quota or no-quota are 2 sides of the same coin in india.
when tossed which ever side it falls its bad for india.
1) suppose a doctor who has coem through quota with less percentage and becomes a doctor and starts operating then think of that situation.
2) i brilliant student without quota system can never come out of his economic background and strat living a decent life.
i think quota sys should be given to 1 person in a family
suppose a person has come through quota and earning the required salary then quota should be stopped for his family(sons, daughters)
what do u say guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quota sys should be there in limited offer kind of thing not based on caste but based on his/her income

@Sachin : I would in general agree with the points you have mentioned which is, it being used as a way to bridge the gap, but how do we stop it from being wrongly used is the big question, why would the rich people not enjoy the benefits of reservations, if they are given the choice they would surely? Reservations/ Quota system is a dual edged weapon once you introduce it you cannot remove it so easily it would take decades to bring about a small cut in reservation as there will be other people who will protest and ask for it. It is a vicious circle.

@Ajay : Restrict the quota to one person in a family! There are so many loopholes which can be encountered in this something as simple as if you have two siblings who would get the opportunity? If a person who has used the quota to get a seat in the college and does not do well, should he be given a second opportunity when he comes for a government job?

@nithin
if we start this change now it will mpact in the next 3rd generation
suppose i have 2 kids both should be given quoto and their children should not be given.

The introduction of reservations must surely have been for positive reasons but I feel that presently the system is further dividing the society and developing a deep inherent doubt amongst the majority about the minority which is worsening the situation overall.
A reserved category student might ask ” Is it really worth it?”. Yes one could land into some top-notch institutes, get into good jobs and all that but would this success(or upgradation) erase out the only fact that one belongs to a reserved category and would it change the perspective of people(the majority) towards you. I seriously doubt it!
I feel that the fundamentals of our country have been such that it completely negates the possibility of success of reservations unless and untill the thinking process is altered altogether.

i believe that this system is a big black spot on our society.India is a democratic nation that is every one is equal before law.But this system is creating an environment of discrimination, this time gheneral class people are the suffereres.
if we are really worried about the upliftment of people belonging to backward classes.Their educational standards should be raised by making education free for them.
here the worst sufferers have been those poor people belonging to general category who do not enjoy any reservation on the basis of economic status and they bear the stigma of forward caste.
It’s a high time to take a hard look at the entire gamut of reservation and deploitice it.INDIA when marching ahead with constant growing economy,it needs efficient working hands instead of recruiting the candidates on the basis of reservation…

@Anupama : You hit the nail in the head, reservations are more about political mileage than for actual benefit of the needy.
