If you have been to Bangalore and had a look around you will see a peculiar flag (half yellow and half red colour) on the roof tops of all the big buildings. Almost everyone who comes to Bangalore will have a question what is this flag, and most of them think it is the Karnataka Flag. But all of us know that we have one and only flag which is the Indian tricolour Flag which alone can be used, and none of the states are allowed to have their own flag.
So how come Karnataka has its own flag, well I did a bit of searching and found that the flag is not officially or unofficially the Karanataka Flag. It is actually the flag of a political party ‘Kannada Paksha’ which was formed in 1965 by one Mr Ma. Ramamurthy, though the party did not last long, but the flag which is actually the Kannada Flag stayed on, and is now in the sentiments of the people as the flag which represents Karnataka. Hence we now find people using this flag whether for the Karnataka Rajotsava or be it for any protests.
Now are you wondering what is the significance of the yellow and red colours in the flag, well they stand for Arshina and Kumkuma respectively. So hope that clears out any misunderstanding that people may have regarding the flag.
If you have a different opinion/comment regarding the flag or its significance please do write it in the comments and share it will one and all.

Hai,
well, I am a kannadiga and I believe you are right. It has become a very important symbol of Kannada supremacy today to have that flag around.
I am an IT professional myself and I must say that thanks to your site, I found out the history about the flag, which I didn’t know about but I was still using.
To change the subject completely, I work on Kannada softwares, and I do this thing about trying to build an online transliterator, and here is a nice site which does that.

Hi
even though am kannadiga,i was nt knowing the details of the flag and its history…This is a great job…Thanx..
November 1st, 2007 at 10:51 am
boss, it is popularly known as karnataka/kannada flag and it is, i have heard that red and black flag for tamil nadu, and kesari flag is for maharastra. every flag has one or other reason. our country flag also had charaka in the middle earlier and later ashoka chakra. but remember today’s flag what we see with ashoka chakra is india flag, and it is. we have emotional binding on our country flag, similarly on our state flag also. most of the flag indicate a community/region etc. finally it is treated as state and language flag

“….well, I am a kannadiga and I believe you are right. It has become a very important symbol of Kannada supremacy today to have that flag around….”
Kannada supremacy…….supremacy to whom or what? Sounds like German/Nazi supremacy…..

Its Kannada Pride, I think the Kannadigas are sick and tired of North Indian migrating to Bangalore and imposing HIndi to the locals. Its us who are creating the software jobs and those povo northies come and grab them with their dirty little hands and slap hindi in our face as gratitude.

Hats off to the Kannadiga pride! But for people who are associated with football and Calcutta, the yellow and red flag is that of the famous football club of Calcutta, the East Bengal. Often during football season, one can come across the same kind of yellow and red flags being hoiseted in various “paadas” (local areas) of the supporters of the East Bengal club.

Well ur R&D on Flag is appreciable but one BIG mistake……
Colors in the Flag does not represent Arishina Kunkuma…..

So funny….!!!!
Colors actually stands for…
Yellow – Shanti – Peace
Red – Kranti – Bravery or Social Revolution
May 15th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Well Ajay…..I am not sure about your theory on what the colors stand for, is there any reference based on which you are mentioning this…..so that I can correct myself, if what you are telling is actually correct….

We are proud about our flag and really we are very aggressive and defensive if any of the migrators expressing that a state cant have its own flag. Maybe if you dont have your state flag, you cant tell for others not to have. That is ur problem. Hindi is forced as a national language only because all know and speak in North India! It is not so in South! Each state has its own tradition, culture, Langauge! We will welcome if you come as a GUEST. We will KICKOFF their ASS those who do Antikannada activities. Naav kannadigaru Ondaadre, 2dinidalli neevella Khaali!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@praveen: I know what you mean…I too am a Kannadiga…but that doesn’t mean I am not an Indian….is it not…..we are all Indian’s ……Hindi is our national language…..but nobody is stopping you from speaking in Kannada…you can speak in Kannada….and what has the flag to do with the anti-kannada activities……
The consitution was written a long time back….and a reason for keeping just one national flag and no state flags has a reason of unity………just imagine how much the situation would be different if all teh states had their own flags…..which flag would you host during Independence day…Republic day or during any important occassion….people of the state would obviously want the state flag to be hosted….instead if awe have single flag…we will feel more united and our respect for the nation is bound to increase….
June 5th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Nithin,
The constitution was written by north Indians and that is the only reason why HIndi was made the national language. I am sorry but I dont see why Sanskrit could not have been the national language? Hindi is really just a dialect derived from persio-arabic shit and granished with a devanigiri script. Look at Israel and how well they revived herbrew to a national language, why couldnt we do that with Sanskrit huh?
Your talking about national unity right, but at what expense? To be indian means to speak hindi and follow mostly north indian culture (esp punjabi culture). I am an NRI and every time western people have made fun of India (which means really north indian culture) i have stood up for india but in reterospect i feel I have wasted my time defending a culture that is really not mine, I now identify myself as Kannadiga and not Indian so that I dont have bear the burden of embarassment the north Indians bring to all Indians.

I feel the same as “Kannada Pride”, Other people are not respecting kannada culture and worse part is some of our people are adapting to that. We are Kannadigas first and we need to preserve our culture.
But Nithin i would thank you for the Info you gave on Karnataka Flag.

India never had any national language. It does not have one even to this day. Why is the author assuming that Hindi is the national language? In saying so, he is intentionally misrepresenting the Indian constitution. Hindi is just one of the 22 official languages on India. Is the author’s tolerence for Hindi coming up because he assumes it is our national language?
July 7th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Thank you Girish,
As I mentioned before I am an NRI, so I am trying to gain more knowledge on Kannada culture and way of life. For starters, on my recent trip to Karnataka I have noticed that our culture in general has retained and maintained Hinduism in its purest Vedic Form, just go to any temple and see the correct sanskrit pronunciations. Karnataka is the best example of how India was before the invasion by the muslims and then later the british. Our food, culture, clothes and music are a reflection of this. Read discovery of India, Pundit Nehru even mentions how the south have maitained the purest form of Vedic Hinduism!
If you really look at North Indian culture it is a distorted mixure of Arabic, Persian and Turkish culture. Look at their language, food, music and culture. Since when was Naan bread, Palak Paneer, Tandoori chicken etc ever indigenous to India? Unfortunately outsiders associate Indians (and us Kannadigas as well) to this culture. Infact I have seen Kannada people serve these types of dishes to westerners when they ask for and I quote “Indian” food. Kannada people, a message to you guys, you will be suprised just how much western people will enjoy our food, you dont have to peddle north indian culture to represent India.
Guys Kannada Culture is rich and strong, if we work hard we can create an environment of pride, not SHAME!

Snehitare,
well well well go to know how people feel and their appreciation
well kannada is 3rd Indian Oldest and original language
Whilst kannada has to secure its position in Bengaluru, It is because of the assholes from north India and other south indian states imposing their languages. sometimes I feel, enough of development in Karnataka. Incoming of those assholes are partly because of Kannadigas encouraging those people by speaking their language and feeling themselves proud. please my dear kannadigas support kannada books, movies, and kannadigas in bengaluru, mysuru and mangaluru. and let others speak in kannada rather than you speaking their language. I have seen assholes from Andhra Pradesh even overseas who does not even know bangalore is the capital of karnataka. If I introduce myself as one from karnataka, many have asked me whether bangalore is a part of Karnataka”. They come by the virtue of consultants and without genuine knowledge. I dont see any reason any reason why we should entertain them. speak kannada rather than you speaking their language and help restore kannada in bengaluru. Learning other language does not give you anything except you will be dominated. THINK THOUSAND TIMES. “INDU NIMMA BASHE NEEVE MAATADADIDDARE BERE YAARU MAATADUVARU, NEEVE GOURAVISADIDDARE ELLI SIKKETU GOURAVA NINNA BASHEGE O NANNA GELEYA”

Hello
I dont know y ther is so much fuss in accepting kannada flag by any one. Its our wish if u like it accept it or just forget. y so many comments?? If u see states in diffrent countries around the world have flags. Kannada flag is just representation of kannada culture and has nothing to do with Indian Tri color flag. We kannadigas are proud of being Indians and so we accept all cultures into our state. But what is unbarable is that people coming from other states tryin to sell their language in Bengaluru. Thats horrible isn’t it? This is the prime reason of increase in kannada activity similar to shiv sena in Mumbai.

Hi!
Hey thanks a lot 4 the knowledge of the flag.Sometimes i feel bad that if we start thinking of our state then there will b no unity 4 our country..but 1 more fact is since there are lots of opprtunities in our city(bengaluru) those north assholes r migrating over here…so better we shall save our state frm outside bastards…
November 1st, 2008 at 6:27 pm
I agree with Kannada pride that there is a tendency among Kannadigas to become more like north Indians. We Kannadigas need to be little assertive about our culture and identity. Otherwise we will just get lost in the crowd.
I have heard this misconception that Hindi is the only national language. There is no such thing as national language in the Indian constituion. In fact article 343 of the Indian constitution grants equal status to Kannada and Hindi as official languages of the Indian union.

Dear All,
Yellow and Red are really stands for Arishina and Kumkuma and I still wont believe that the flag came from Kannada Pakhsa.. Arishina and Kumkuma are the necessary and important things for Muthyade and we treat kannadambe is our mother and she is muthyade with Arishina and Kumkuma so thatz y the flag is Yellow and red..
In the movie “Avale nanna hendthi” there is a song “Karunaada thaayi sadaa chinmayi” in that song they used the Karnataka flag with the red top and yellow as the below half of the flag color .. really I dint understand why they made it ULTAA!!

reply to Nitn from Mahesh shetty Toornto canada.
well I also recognise myself more as a kannadiga then Indian here is why.
1) India recognise them self as land of san skrit. land of aryan, land of taj mahal.
But Kannadigas are none of this.
2
) Hindi is not the offcial langauge of India.
Hindi was used a link langauge by north indians as they cannot learn English and English was the link langauge in south .
remmber tamilnadu wanted a seperate nation when nehru and shastri wanted Hindi as the national langauge .
Till today constitution of india has 15 national langaues.
It is wrong idea to say Hindi is the national langaue, it is language of lallus.. lol..bayya;as , biharis and punjabis not any one below vindyas,
remmber Kannadigas were from madya pradesh to cauvery, now we are just in small place called karnataka.
maritis ( North indian packs) have moved to vindyas and telgu is a broken langauge of kannada. ( eastren chalukyas supported that)
well Bangaluru- Yes I know I studied in st joseph and kannadigas cannot have much say in the cristian istitution as most of them are owned by tamisl and mallu.. who at any cost want to kill kanaada now northis joining..
the state govermnet shoud make a law to take out CBSE AND ICSE who are anti kannada who are more bad then terrorist, thay are causing mroe problems staying inside beangaluru.
50 years of India – this has not helped much for karnataka. they dont have aa language policy and silently they want to move to places like karnataka and flood with non – kannadigas.
In china and russia if a person wants to move to other province they have to apply for a work authorisation there is nothing like that in india and the lawas are made to favor the hindi , bimaru states , there is a hindi prachara samithi which is funded by myand all non hindi people to promote hindi at our own expense.
Every year they meet to investigate how much hindi has been implemented .
This hindi devil will burn the nation and we will be dis integrated once again.
No one wants there langauge and culture to be obliterated and if the hindi think they can move and thatr is the reason why central goverment promotes hindi fils and calls it as india films. ( they forget aht india has so many other lngauage) and when they represent to putside world they are very selective to show the TAJ MAHAL mogal north indian architechture
rather then showing hampi. madurai ellara..
or mysuru palace which is mroe visited then taj mahal.
so lets wake up and unite and work for kannada unity..
live and let live… shoud be the polcy.. if some one tries to outnumber us lets give them a fitting reply as kannadigas,
snehakku sai samaraku sai.. ( ready for friendship based on partnership and eqality else we dont mind.. war)
a true kannadiga

If being Indian means eating Naan, Palak Paneer, watching bollywood and speaking Hindi the first thing we Kannadigas could start of with is letting people know we are from Karnataka and not India. Maybe then it can seperate us from the embarassment that alot of North Indians bring on to the whole Indian community. The Taj Mahal is just a symbol of Islamic oppression and our subservient attitude towards Invaders. As Mahesh has pointed out, the symbold of India could be the many monuments found in Karnataka such as Hampi, Mysuru, etc. People forget that it is Karnataka that has preserved Hinduism in its purest form while the North of India was ravaged by islamic and british imperialism. Now those buggers want to pawn of their distorted culture heavily influenced by invaders such as the turks, persians and arabs on the true Hindus of Karnataka!
Jai Karnataka.

@all: Reading most of the comments make me feel that either the people are not understanding what the post was about or they are too much caught up with their love for Kannada that they can not even make out that what they are writing is not in context to the post.
Even I am a Kannadiga, but I feel that if the people who are posting the comments about Kannada are really worried they would have:
(1) Instead of just plain talk they should take action in a sensible way to promote Kannada.
(2) Instead of posting comments here in some foreign language they should have created a blog in Kannada and put all that they feel there and not in this post.
(3) Instead of talking big about Hampi, etc, write something about these places, give people all the required information and let them know its significance.
(4) Instead of foul mouthing people of your own country and blaming them; look into how they were able to do what you all have mentioned and why you were not able to do the same here?? Sometimes we need to correct ourself before blaming others.
All I would like to tell everyone is that if you want to do something just do it, but in a sensible way.
January 28th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
This is an interesting article and I really appreciate the idea of digging in to the history of our state flag. I should admit that I have always considered Karnataka to have its flag since I was born after it was part of our state. Being a kannidaga my self I take pride in it and have always thought we should have a state flag and a national flag. It should be part of every Kannadiga or any organization that wishes to display it on its premises.
If we have doubts of carrying a flag in each state then we should eliminate that and support it so that it can become a part of our administration and governance – help bring better understanding and unity among the citizens of a particular state and promote brand identity. There is no harm in having a state flag.
January 29th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Even though its the flag of a political party,it is widely used as the flag of karnataka. This must be stopped. From this site its clear that even kannadigas dont know that its not kannada flag.
March 6th, 2009 at 2:22 am
I would like to say that we all are Indians and we just need to give respect to our culture and other state’s culture. India is not a perfect country but we together have to make it. Probably India is most diverse country in the world. Every state have its own culture very different from other states so is Karnataka. Regarding northern India I would say that over the years of constant attack from Turks, Persians and Arabs its culture got deteriorate. Like Nalanda university which was destroyed completely by invaders was the one of the best learning center in the world in the state of Bihar which has become most under developed state in present day India.
We fought together for our independence from British rule and Muslim invaders then today why we have problem in living together? it’s the most unfortunate for Hindus. If we start fighting like this then people from outside will get chance to destroy our culture, land and our language again. We just need to try to make things better and try to achieve original Indian culture. Karnataka has rich mix of original Indian culture so it would be great if it start spreading it across India.
About north Indians coming and living in Bangalore I’ll say that not only north Indians but people from other Indian states are also living here. Bangalore has become a metropolitan city. If you go around the world then you’ll find every metropolitan city has same kind of mix of different cultures. Even in India also if you go to other cities lets say New Delhi then you’ll find its mix of many culture and people from every part of country including Karnataka are living in this city and by the way its original name was Inderprastha. India is a developing nation because of which all these problems persist but someday it’ll become a developed country then things will be fine. If I’ll have to select one national language then my choice will never be Hindi instead I’ll suggest Sanskrit.
May 14th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Namaskaara,
The Yellow and red flag is Eeelam’s National flag. Watch Tamils protesting around the world bearing LTTE and Red-Yellow flags. The yellow-red bi color is no significance in Kannada or Karnataka identity. It is wasting our time just taking here and showing our sentiments ONLY with bicolor FLAGS at the times of neighboring states political dramas. Politicians are using this weakness to acquire their own benefits. Let us drop our sentiments in JUST colors. (I heard from my friend that a flag of red tiger in yellow background was the Chola kings flag. Is it true?).

KANNADA is the third oldest language of World. (After . . . Sanskrit & Greek)
KANNADA is as old as 2000 years.
KANNADA is 99.99% perfect -logically and scientifically.

Shri VINOBA BHAVE called script as QUEEN OF WORLD SCRIPTS – ” Vishwa LipigaLa RaaNi – ”
So called International language — English does not have its own Script. English is written in “ROMAN”
So called National Language — Hindi does not have its own script. Hindi is written in “Deva nagari”
Though Tamil has a script, logically it is imperfect — as common letters are used for many pronunciations.
KANNADA is as old as 2000 years. You can write what you speak and you can read what you write.

Hi,
Just happened to pass by this log during a search. A lot has been said during the past one year or so. I would like to add some of my thoughts here.
Nobody is born into a place of his choice or a religion of his choice. But being born in India, it offers its own essence. An essence which stands out from the rest of the world. While the rest of the world emphasises on just materialistic developement, India has stood the test of time and its rich cultulral roots are only getting stronger. The land whether was invaded by Aryans or not is a seperate topic by itself. But regions of india developed over a period of time. Many great thinkers contributed to this cultural gowth in their own capacities. Bear in mind churning always results in better growth. The lifestyle of this great land called India has to be understood through the diversity of its culture. To understand this Language is a tool. I just happened to read about kannada words in Greek comedies and so on and so forth. Fantastic. The richness of this language is there to see. The reach of the language is there to see. Lets just not take the pride in a language. Pride is inherently associated with localist thought. Let us use the pride to see how it is cross linked to other languages and cultures of which great thinkers were born.
I would also like to point out a fact here, This is one land which has had the privilige of housing the great Ramanujacharya along with its own son the great Madhvacharya. Not to forget Sri Shankara who opened one of the recognised mutt at sringeri.
The land has been strolled upon by these greats denoting its a land where knowledge would blossom. Lets use pride in a small way.

Hello,
I would stand for English..let us have English as our National language…Because this is the language which is giving food to me and my family today…IT companies in Bangalore are working with English language..not by Kannada language..Also the red-yellow falg is not an official flag of karnataka…as per the National flag rules, states shouldn’t use their own flags..there is only one flag that is showing the proud of India and Indian, that is the NATIONAL FLAG of India…let us not fight on language, regionalism and culture…we are all Indians.

I am not a kannadiga…I agree to many things said here and disagree to many things too…seperate flag is not such a good idea as India hav unity in only ONE THING—THE COMMON FLAG…Dont destroy that too…I alsodont like north INdians trying to call hindi fims indian films, calling hindi speakers as true indians etc…I hate their attitude…i agree south India shud get more representation while representing India…Common langugae can be made as English…even these north indians also will hav to learn english..so why they die for imposing hindi on south…hindi is absolutely not needed in south…But in the case of kannada flag,i dont think its needed…we blame north indians as their culture, langugae and ways represent India…so let us not leave the triclour flag also to them…we shud use it and asseret that south indians who are non-hindi speakers are also Indians…
another thing i would like to request…does the so called kannada flag represent all kannadigas….i think NO…in my knowledge, there are 3 percent christians and 13 percent muslims and small percents parsis, jain etc in the state..the flag is supposed to represent all of them…right??
but it looks like HIndu flag with the picture of a goddess inside it…why is it so???
